Although when I first started this out I was going to try to limit myself to one areas golf courses (it was Las Vegas Golf Courses, Nevada Golf Courses, or Vegas Golf Courses, then it was Kansas golf courses), in my worldly travels I've come to find I've just got too many different courses to speak about. So I'm just going to jump around.
The golf course today is Quail Ridge Golf Course in Baker City Oregon. I found this course completely by accident. Two weekends ago I was driving my wife's car from Kansas to Seattle (we are making a move - get ready for great Northwest Golf Courses!) and because the trip was 30 hours I decided I owed myself a little golf. This course just happened to be the only course I could find that fit into the time slot I needed. And it was a great find.
Quail Ridge is the municipal course for Baker City Oregon. And they just happened to be blessed with great weather in the summer, allowing for fairly quick greens and a lush golf course. Nestled in a valley of the Blue Mountains, Quail Ridge Golf Course offers excellent views from many of holes. And at $48 a round with cart, its a reasonable buy.
When you get to the clubhouse, don't expect to be impressed. It rings muni course. The people, however, were very nice, and there is a restaurant in clubhouse that got pretty busy for the dinner hour. Stick around and give it a try - I'm pretty sure I heard karaoke as we were leaving!
As for the course itself, don't expect a lot of length. The course measured out at the tips somewhere south of 6000 yards. But even with a lack of length, they managed to put a couple of challenging par 5s in there, one measuring nearly 600 yards.
The fairways were a bent grass, were fully grown in, and were well mowed. Playing from the fairway was a dream. The rough was in good shape too, with both the traditional fare and some natural mountain rough (essentially desert).
The greens were faster than anticipated, but were nothing to write home about. Despite being rather slow they did roll true. I have no complaints here.
For my overall rating, I'd give the course a 7.5. It wasn't anything special, but for being one of the only courses in northeast Oregon, it held my attention nicely.
